For this week’s wanderlust, I have chosen the best places to visit in Slovenia.  I feel like Slovenia is one of those countries that just gets overlooked and I find myself drawn more and more towards those kinds of places.

Where exactly is Slovenia?

Slovenia is a relatively small country nestled between Italy, Croatia, Austria, and Hungary.  I was oh-so-close last year when I was in both Italy and Croatia.  Oh well.

Now that you know where Slovenia is, you are probably wondering…what are the best places to visit in Slovenia?

Visit Lake Bled

One of the first pictures I ever saw of Slovenia was of Lake Bled.  That picture alone made me want to go.  Lake Bled is located in the Julian Alps in northwestern Slovenia.  A medieval castle stands on the north side of the lake and the entire lake surrounds an island.

 Visit the Predjama Castle

The Predjama Castle is nestled into the side of a cliff.  This castle is located in Predjama and is about 10km from Postojna Cave.

 Visit the Lipica Stud Farm

A great way to see Lipizzaner stallions is at the Lipica Stud Farm.  This is the oldest European stud farm that breeds a single breed of horse and is the original stud farm of the Lipizzaners.  I’m down for anything to do with horses.

Visit Piran

Piran is in southwestern Slovenia on the Gulf of Piran on the Adriatic Sea.  Everyone that visits Piran loves it and it’s easily probably the favorite of the coastal towns of Slovenia.

Go Hiking in Triglav National Park

Triglav National Park, the only Slovenian National Park, is in the northwest and extends along the Italian border.

Go Kayaking on the Soca River

Kayaking and rafting on the Soca River is very common and who wouldn’t want to.  I mean, seriously, look at that water.

Vintgar Gorge

Only 4km from Bled and carved by the Radovna River, this gorge is a must see.

Overall, it looks like Slovenia has a ton of outdoors activities which is right up my alley.

Have you ever visited any of these places?  Have any must see or do things to tell me about in Slovenia?

Wow! Wow! Wow! It looks like something out of a fairy-tale! Lake Bled and Predjama Castle look stunning.

I know, right? Slovenia wasn’t even on my radar until recently…now, I’m kind of irritated with myself that it wasn’t haha

  2. Rachel

Yea…. you’ve sold it to me. The photo of the castle on the lake edge was the winner.

I’ve been to both Lake Bled and Predjama Castle. So amazing. I really enjoyed Ljubljana as well. Very pretty for a city. I also visited the Postojna Caves which was pretty cool. Piran looks gorgeous! I’ll have to go next time.

That’s awesome Adelina and I have to admit, I’m pretty jealous!

  4. Milene - My Cup of Travel

Oh Slovenia is a beautiful place. My mum always visited Slovenia when she was young but I only drove through it once… I know – bad choice! I hope, when IΒ΄m back in Europe to see more of these hidden gems in Eastern Europe… Great post, great tips!

    1. Ashley Hubbard

Thanks Milene! I need to see more of Eastern Europe as well–really only been in Western except Croatia.

We loved Slovenia. We spent 2 weeks there and could not have been more impressed with the diversity of things to do and see in such a small country. From Ljubljana and Piran, which are definitely two of the prettiest cities in Europe, to Lake Bked, Triglav, the Vintgar Gorge, the amazing caves, and all the rest of the amazing natural attractions – Slovenia definitely has something for everyone. Definitely a great addition to any trip to Europe.

Ahhh I’m so jealous. I think my next trip to Europe will be more of the Eastern Europe countries…they don’t get as much love and they should!

  6. A Brit and A Southerner

Never visited Slovenia either Ashley but after reading this post and seeing those amazing pictures it is certainly a country that has jumped up the ladder near the top of the bucket list. I know that both Ljubljana and Piran are two of the more aesthetically attractive cities in Europe as Travis indicated in an earlier post but on top of this there seems to be an abundance of things to do in Slovenia, ranging from seeing the obvious natural beauty to exploring hidden gems inside these cities.

Hope you get to venture there some day soon!

This reminded me of my school trip many years ago. We did all the sights here, except hiking Triglav, and kayaking Soca river. Lovely post, Ashely. I agree that Slovenia is a great country to visit.

Thank you very much! I’ll have to head there soon and make my way down to Croata while I’m at it πŸ™‚

  9. It looks so beautiful and seems to be the European place everyone is talking about in the last year or so – I really want to go!

    1. Ashley Hubbard

I have heard a lot more about it recently than ever before. It’s definitely on my radar for next year!

  10. Mrs. Chasing the Donkey

You can go here AFTER you come see my in Croatia. It’s a wonderful place, and Lake Bled is more amazing in real life.

    1. Ashley Hubbard

      I won’t argue with you…Croatia first, then Slovenia πŸ˜€
