Not that anyone asked me but I’m going to throw Not that anyone asked me but I’m going to throw my two cents into the ring on @netflix’s Tiger King.⁣ ⁣ I probably watched it the first day it came out because I feel like I was talking about it before it became huge. ⁣ ⁣ I thought it was an animal rights doc (because I was already aware of the shit show that is the exotic pet industry). I quickly found out — it’s most definitely not that. While I do feel that the overall tone of the doc is anti-exotic pet ownership (at least in this atmosphere), it was definitely about more than that. ⁣ ⁣ I struggle with this because I am vegan, an animal activist, an animal advocate, completely anti-zoo, anti exotic pet ownership and anti basically anything that’s not a true sanctuary. ⁣ ⁣ But, I still recommended this documentary because:⁣ ⁣ A) it was the exact kind of distraction we all needed right now⁣ ⁣ B) it truly is the wildest thing I’ve ever watched⁣ ⁣ C) I am FASCINATED by the human mind. Me being fascinated by literally everything in this doc, I feel is no different than me watching a Ted Bundy doc and being fascinated by it. I’m still anti-murder just like I’m anti-animal abuse/exploitation. ⁣ ⁣ All that being said...I’m glad people are also equally fascinated BUT I’m sad that it seems the majority of people completely are missing the mark on how absolutely HORRIBLE and CRUEL this industry is. ⁣ ⁣ Don’t be so blinded by the insane shenanigans and miss the victims here - the animals. Take this doc and this dumpster fire of a story and learn something worthwhile from it:⁣ ⁣ Do not go to facilities that have cub petting. ⁣ ⁣ Do not attend circuses or magic shows that include animals.⁣ ⁣ Do not go to facilities that allow selfies or ANY physical interaction with wild animals. ⁣ ⁣ Do not purchase an exotic animal as a pet.⁣ ⁣ Research, research, research! Always check out every location you go to before you go. It may seem like a good option on the surface, but dig deep. Even I sometimes still get fooled because these pseudo-sanctuaries do a great job at making it look like they are doing great things. ⁣ ⁣ Other red flags: selling, purchasing, breeding, and trading of animals. ⁣ ⁣ 📸 taken @turpentinecreek. I’ve been fairly active on stories but haven’t had the motivation or inspiration to post on my actual feed. ⁣ ⁣ My emotions have been all over the place. ⁣ Some moments I’m super anxious. ⁣ ⁣ Some moments I’m super calm [i equate this to living with anxiety full time] ⁣ ⁣ Some moments I’m laughing out of the sheer ridiculousness of it all. ⁣ ⁣ Some days I just want to lie in bed all day doing nothing. ⁣ ⁣ On the flip side. ⁣ ⁣ This has forced me to slow down and I don’t hate that. We’ve been going on daily walks (and even walking to the store to get our essentials). I’ve been cooking more. Reading more. ⁣ ⁣ This has allowed me to re-examine my business as my income has practically stopped. It may or may not come as a surprise to you that t It may or may not come as a surprise to you that the travel industry is shifting towards a more sustainable and ethical way. In some ways, it’s shifting slowly and some ways, it’s shifting quickly. ⁣ ⁣ Is there even such a thing as sustainable travel is a question some even pose. In many ways, I can understand why the answer would be no. However, I’m on the side of the fence that argues the value that we – both personally and globally – obtain from traveling. I’m seeing this even more with the detrimental effects that are happening to the tourism industry due to coronavirus. This isn’t just about whining about missing out on a trip - small businesses are losing much needed money, countries that heavily rely on tourism dollars are going to be picking up the pieces for a while and more. ⁣ ⁣ I refuse to give advice to anyone on whether they should or shouldn’t travel right now. But, I do urge you - when you do feel comfortable - to travel in a sustainable way. ⁣ ⁣ One amazing way to do this and the most sustainable method of accommodation in my humble opinion is house sitting. A list of tasks that I knew would be impossible to complete but pressuring myself nonetheless as usual. ⁣ ⁣ But, anxiety had other plans. I felt an overwhelming amount of anxiety. Still, I knew it was just my brain and I continued to try to outsmart it, tried to force my way through it and still get work done.⁣ ⁣ The drowning sensation only became worse, the suffocation only intensified. Until I finally I had no choice but to succumb to it, turned on the most relaxing playlist I could find and curled up under the covers allowing myself to relax and go back to sleep. ⁣ ⁣ As I wake up many hours after planned and feel guilty, I also feel, for the most part, calmer. ⁣ ⁣ Sometimes I can wade through it, sometimes I can’t. How often do you put off exploring areas near home How often do you put off exploring areas near home because they’ll “always be there?”⁣ ⁣ Same here. ⁣ ⁣ I’m so guilty of taking the nearby spots for granted. But I made a resolution to do more local travel. So Michael and I headed down to Huntsville to spend the day with @coleman_concierge ⁣ ⁣ We checked out some new places, some old places, ate at some new vegan spots (new for me at least!) and it was lovely! ⁣ ⁣ Definitely need to do this more.
