Meet the Gypsies | Fern of The Salty Fern
1. Who are you? Where are you from? Where are you now?
I’m Fern, I’m from Huddersfield, a little green town in the north of England. Right now, and for the last 2 years I’ve been living in Playa del Carmen, Mexico
2. What’s your packing strategy? Heavy or light packer? Backpack or suitcase?
It totally depends where I’m going. A long-hall trip I pack a suitcase every time. Although I’m totally low maintenance, there are some things over 100ml I just cant live without! For short trips backpacks do me… I’m like Mary Poppins, I can basically fit the entire house into one backpack.
3. How do you afford your travels? Budget traveler or lean more towards luxury?
I’m usually a budget traveller, that way you cam do more when you actually reach your destination. I have a job that I can take anywhere with me so it’s pretty east to work and travel. Although for my big move to Mexico, I worked for 5 months in England, almost without spending a penny, it was crazy difficult sometimes, but gave me a great deal of savings to travel!
4. If you could go anywhere tomorrow, where would you go?
Japan, anywhere in Japan, everywhere in Japan! It’s forever been the top of my list, I just need to get saving.
5. Is there anywhere you won’t travel to and why?
No, I’ve been to the middle of nowhere in South Africa, visited some of ‘the most dangerous parts’ of Mexico, and lived like a local in the poorest parts of Cuba. Nothing about travel or different cultures scares me, it simply fascinates and intrigues.
6. What’s the most adventurous thing you’ve eaten?
I’ve eaten so many things! Crocodile, Buffalo, Snake, Ostrich, Kangaroo, Meal Worms, Ants, Grasshoppers… not sure what is more adventurous?!
7. What’s the most adventurous thing you’ve ever done?
I was in a rehabilitation centre in South Africa, where I was supposed to be working with a cheetah. It was my second day with this lovely girl when she decided she didn’t know if she liked me very much… so I ended up running for my life away from the aforementioned cheetah, and climbing up a tree! In the end we were best friends though, don’t worry.
8. You have a degree in Zoology! Do you use this on your travels?
Yes and no, where I currently am I’m not able to work in my profession, however I do use it for volunteering and teaching purposes a lot!
9. What’s the #1 item on your bucket list?
A stupidly cool and expensive camera! I want to take my photography to the next level (but, as you can tell by my description of said camera, I know nothing about them!)
10. Most importantly, where to next?
Now isn’t that the question of all questions?! The truth, I have no idea! It’s a toss up between a lot of different places, all I know is that life will show me where I’m going soon enough. My plan is to leave Mexico close to December this year so lets see!
