1.  Who are you?  Where are you from?  Where are you now?

Hi My name is Stacey Sandlin-Veikalas.  I was born in California, grew up in Colorado and now we are currently living overseas, in Germany (until June).

2.  What’s your packing strategy?  Heavy or light packer?  Suitcase or backpacker?

We are light packers, we normally pack 2 bags for 4 people for a 3 month trip.  We normally carry duffel bags with wheels on them, then 2 backpacks.

3.  How do you afford your travels?  Budget traveler or lean more towards luxury?

We afford our travels from my husband’s job. I do not work so he gets to pay for it all! Lucky Guy!

4.  If you could go anywhere tomorrow, where would you go?

Hmm I have always wanted to go to Phuket and we are going there in June ~ so Now I am going to say Mauritius.

5.  Is there anywhere you won’t travel to and why?

No I don’t think is anywhere we won’t travel ~ we have been to Russia, the middle east and to Egypt ~ so No there is now where that is off limits, we just have places that we would rather go.

6.  What’s the most adventurous thing you have eaten?

Well we always try to local food ~ from Blood Sausage, Horse sausage, to Cow Balls and rattlesnake eggs.  It used to be a fight to get to the kids to try new things but now they eat and try everything once ~ it’s a game.  Thailand should be interesting this summer!

7.  You have a great story.  What were your children’s first reactions when you told them y’all were leaving for Lithuania?

Well the children were easy.  Benas (my husband) and I sat down and included them in the decision ~ we could stay back and he would go and be gone 9 months a year ~ or we could go with him and we explained all that it would entail ~ they have never ever said they were sorry and want to go back to the USA They love to watch him play ball and they love to travel ~ if that changes then we will talk about it ~ My friends and Mother were probably the people who told me I was Nuts!  Now that we have been doing this for 8+ years they are all ok with it!

8.  You gave up a lot in Colorado to be able to travel the world.  What was the hardest thing to give up?

Well luckily we are very fortunate financially so we don’t miss anything money wise ~ but I think the one thing I miss the most is working! Weird right ~ I think sometimes it is easy to lose yourself in your family ~ especially with someone who is a professional athlete. So the hardest part is really finding a purpose and doing something. One reason I started writing a blog, and am working on a travel book is to get back into having my own work and my own life ~ so to speak!

9.  How do you balance your husband’s basketball career with traveling?

We normally travel during the off season which is May – September.  Then during Christmas and spring break I will travel alone with the kids ~ he cannot travel (for fun) during the basketball season. But he travel quite a bit for basketball ~ in the last 2 years he has played in Israel, Russia, Croatia, Italy, Belgium, & Spain We will go with him if we have the chance!

10. How do you incorporate your adorable German Shepherd into your travels?

Our dog, Duke, goes with us during the season ~ wherever my husband’s contract is ~ the team always provided us housing and a car ~ and we make sure that the dog is always welcome (in the house and car)  before we say yes to a contract.  During the off season, we pack our stuff up and take it and our Dog to My husband’s parents in Joniskis Lithuania. We always stop there before we go and stop there before we head out for the new basketball season.  He spend the summers there with them swimming in the lakes and running through the forest!

11.  Most importantly, where to next?

Travel wise, our next trip is SE Asia, Thailand, Cambodia, Laos, Vietnam ~ we will travel for 4 weeks and then we rented a house on Rawai beach and will stay there for 4 weeks, then head to Lithuania to pack our stuff get Duke ~ and well from there we don’t know that all depends on my husband contract ~ his agent will let us know where the next contact and basketball club will be!
