Meet the Gypsies – Dylan and Shereen of The Travelling Postcard

1.  Who are you?  Where are you from?  Where are you now?

The Travelling Postcard was set up by myself (Dylan) and Shereen, two individuals who met at the same workplace in Gibraltar.  Where is that you may say? Gibraltar is located at the Southern most tip of Spain. It is a British dependant territory and is home to 30,000 Gibraltarians.  We used to work at a Travel company and one day decided to pack our bags sell everything we owned and travel the world.  We now find ourselves in Gibraltar but will soon be leaving to South East Asia for a 4 months adventure from Vietnam to Bali.

2.  What’s your packing strategy?  Heavy or light packer?  Suitcase or backpacker?

Up until last year both Shereen and I loved to travel and try the finer things in life.  In 2013, we visited different places such as Paris, London, Rome, Miami, Cancun, Barcelona, Ibiza Lisbon, Madrid among a few others.  Among this list, you can immediately realise that these places are not backpack worthy in comparison to other destinations which we felt would be ideal to just travel light.  So in comparison from 2013, where we travelled with suitcases, we have now both set our aim for 2014 to be to travel light with the bare necessities.  We have started packing our 70 litre backpacks which will only carry 2 sets of clothes along with a first aid box, one head torch, my blogging notebook and a few other essentials such as my GoPro Hero 3+ …what I do without it!

3.  How do you afford your travels?  Budget traveler or lean more towards luxury?

In the past, we saved up every time we decided to travel to a destination.  In some places we travelled on a budget and in others we tended to sway more to the luxury side of life.  In this new adventure we have left our jobs and saved up a substantial amount of money for our 4 months adventure, this is how we saved for it.

4.  If you could go anywhere tomorrow, where would you go?

This is a tough decision for us both, we have for some time now always thought of South East Asia as our ideal destination.  However now that it is so near to be accomplished we already have a our eyes set on completing the Kilimanjaro in 2015 or 2016.  So in essence, if we could go anywhere tomorrow, it would certainly have to be climb Kilimanjaro in Tanzania.  Such a challenge would test our ability to work as a team and of course we would raise money for charity as we are really close to fundraising for those in need.

5.  Is there anywhere you won’t travel to and why?

We are both open to visit any place around the world, however when there is political unrest, a destination often warns against any necessary travel.  One place which we both dislike is therefore places like North Korea, although it is a place which we are both curious to see how they actually live in the Communist state and must mention that it would be great to visit as it does have a 1960’s feel to it.

6.  What’s the most adventurous thing you’ve eaten?

I have eaten a few delicacies as I like to call it.  I actually tried a bulls Tongue and Testicles in Spain along with crickets in Italy. In our next adventure my next objective is to try out barbeque rats, apparently it is a must when you are in Vietnam!

7.  Like me, y’all are starting your long term travels in Southeast Asia.  What made you decide to start there?

Its a good question, we first decided to start in South East Asia due to its culture along with it being more cost effective than to start in Australia.  South East Asia has many places of which we both felt as if we just had to visit.  We had been planning nearly a year ago to just leave everything behind and start our new adventure.  We both enjoy how populations in Asia share different customs.  I am also a passionate gastronomy freak who just loves to try anything when I travel somewhere, I have heard many things of South East Asia’s culinary brilliance.

8.  You have a pretty ambitious bucket list.  Are you planning on checking any items off this year?

Yes, we have a pretty ambitious bucket list, but hey, everything is possible and dreams are there to be fulfilled.  In the next month or so we intend on learning how to cook a Thai meal in Thailand, ride a hot air balloon, go kayaking, go diving, ride an elephant.  In the next six months we both want to learn how to Snowboard, preferably in Andorra, between Spain and France!  Shereen’s ultimate fantasy for 2014 would be to reach 3000 likes on Facebook, twitter, pinterest and instagram, we are steadily getting there!

9.  What’s your biggest advice for others wanting to save up for long term travel and making the decision to do so?

If it’s in your thoughts and you have a really big incline on making it happen, what is actually stopping you?  Is it materialistic? is it fear?  everything is possible, I am not going to lie, saving up money is hard, even more when you lead a busy social life where everything results in spending money.  Saving up for 8 months is not an easy task, however, you will need to deprive yourself of certain activities such as going out for dinner and replace it with staying at home for a nice family dinner.  Find yourself a part time job to earn that little bit extra, remember every penny or cent counts!  Just remember your ultimate goal, Shereen used to tell me every time I felt like a I needed a nudge to save up, just think that we will be in a white sandy beach with a mojito just watching the world go by!  Simple budgeting will get you a long way, we saved up £12,000 in less than 8 months.

10.  Out of the two of you, who would you say is the most adventurous?

In terms of adventure, I (Dylan) am the most adventurous always wanting to find out what is out there, I am very knowledgeable of cultures and communities, it is what I studied in university.  Shereen is adventurous but the next coming months will make her more aware of everything that surrounds South East Asia, thus resulting in her becoming an adventure junkie!

11.  Most importantly, where to next?  What kind of itinerary do you have planned for SEA?

On the 9th March, we fly from Gibraltar to London and then from London to Ho Chi Minh City via Doha. Its going to be a long trip and I (Dylan) don’t do well with flying! with regards to the itinerary we travel via the coast of Vietnam until we reach Halong Bay. Go to Laos and spend some time there before heading to Thailand (Chiang Mai and Bangkok). Thereafter, its quite flexible, we are thinking of heading towards Cambodia as we have heard its absolutely beautiful and then head back to Thailand to do a bit of Island Hopping. Finally, head towards Malaysia, Singapore and Indonesia before we come back to London via Bali. If anyone has any tips on what not to miss whilst travelling through here please let us know!
